Fortifying Affirmation & Demolishing Doubt

As we mentioned in our last post, there’s no point in affirming, “I have everything I need to take my business to the next level,” when at the back of your mind almost the exact opposite script is playing: “I’m no good at delegating. That time I hired an assistant, things went horribly wrong. The manager I hired was fantastic, but she eventually left and I’ve never been able to find anyone as good. I’m scared this isn’t scalable because I don’t trust people to do things as well as I do. What if I lose all my clients because I hire the wrong person…” and on, and on. These inner conflicts robs us of our ability to build confidence and momentum. So how do we DESTROY that?! ... Look no further...

Here is a simple tool to fortify affirmations that make you believe
Affirmation Fortification Exercise

Your Exercise:
Choose a positive affirmation you’d like to apply, or that you’ve tried using and hasn’t worked.
  1. Awareness: write down all the thoughts that run contrary to that affirmation. Beside each of those thoughts, write down the resulting feeling (hint: feelings tend to be just one word, e.g. sad, happy, frustrated, elated, disappointed, excited, upset).
  2. Acceptance: accept those thoughts and feelings. (This can be the tricky bit. Most of us spend our lives denying our feelings because a) we don’t think we ‘should’ feel that way and b) it’s nicer to avoid uncomfortable feelings. Stay with me, because this is where the big shifts can happen.) Simply look at what you’ve written and say aloud, “I accept that that’s how I feel.”
  3. Processing: it might be that you’ve already noticed quite a few things you can act on (e.g. in the above example, “arrange coffee with Simon to pick his brains about how he’s recently hired and retained 3 managers.”) For everything else, I recommend EFT/Tapping (book a session with me for more info).
  4. Affirmation: go back to your positive affirmation and notice how it feels to say it out loud. Chances are, it feels a bit more true, a bit more attainable than before. (*However, sometimes affirming something positive is still too much of a leap and can still be counter-productive. In these instances, I recommend something neutral, e.g. “I’m open to the possibility of taking my business to the next level,” and noticing what that brings up.)
For best results I recommend doing this with a coach.
